culinary artist — Bernard Chauly

To cook for others is to listen — to seasons, to stories, to what is being held and what is being released.

Every threshold in human life has been marked by food. We gather to eat at births and weddings, at wakes and anniversaries, at the meal before a long journey and the feast that welcomes someone home. Food is how we say what cannot otherwise be said — that we are here, that this moment matters, that you are not alone.

As a culinary artist and private chef, I create meals that are more than nourishment. They are rituals of gathering, shaped for moments of transition, celebration, remembrance and farewell — culinary happenings, chef-in-residence and private chef experiences, shared feasts and intimate last suppers.

A Sense of Place and Season

Originally from Malaysia, my cooking travels from East Asia to East Anglia, with flavours touched by the Middle East and Mediterranean. Trained at Ashburton Chefs Academy and seasoned by years cooking in Athens, Ankara, Venice, Provence, Nairobi and Hong Kong, I celebrate what is seasonal and locally available — creating food that honours both journey and belonging, memory and place.

Food as Ritual

At the table, time slows. Hands meet. Silence is allowed. Meaning is carried not only in words but in taste, gesture and shared presence. The threshold does not have to be named to be felt — it is there in the care with which a dish is composed, in the particular quiet that descends when people are truly fed.

Each meal is attuned to personal histories, cultural roots and the spirit of the moment. In farewell settings, food becomes a gentle companion — grounding, comforting and honouring life as it has been lived. These gatherings are not performances but acts of attention: an invitation to sit together, to remember, to bless… and to let go.
